SO Int Conf AIDS. 1994 Aug 7-12;10(1):384 (abstract no. PD0142). Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94370487 AB OBJECTIVE: To assess whether networking among HIV positive women enhances their capacity to cope with HIV/AIDS. METHOD: A sample study drawn from 300 HIV positive women located at 10 urban and rural locations in Uganda. Information has been drawn from close interpersonal discussions, seminars, meetings and questionnaires with members of the network. RESULT: At the initiation of the programme about 70% of members had negative attitudes and high expectations. Todate only about 30% of members still have self pity, about 40% are still dependent and 30% still have high expectations. HIV positive women who were not in any organised group had problems in coping with HIV/AIDS. CONCLUSION: Communication should be improved by formulating networks among women to make it possible to reach the women at the grassroot level. Empowerment of women as care providers in the community should be encouraged especially in the 3rd world where there exists all sorts of inhibitions and limitations.
